Heating and Cooling
Heaters
Heaters are used to control the temperature of the greenhouse. The importance of the heaters is to create a warm environment of the plants during colder times of the year. The heaters are located towards the top of the end wall of the greenhouse.
Thermostat
The thermostat regulates the temperature of the greenhouse. The importance of the thermostat is to give an accurate temperature of the greenhouse. The thermostat is located level with the plants to give the correct temperature, and usually contains a shade to protect it from the sun.
exhaust fans
Fans used for ventilating the interior of the greenhouse by drawing air from the interior and expelling it outside. The importance of the exhaust fans is to provide sufficient airflow throughout the greenhouse to remove solar heat as it enters. The exhaust fans are located on the end wall of the greenhouse.
circulation fans
Circulation fans are used to move air in a coherent horizontal pattern. There importance is to keep the temperature consistent throughout the greenhouse and reduce the incidence of foliage disease. The circulation fans are located 1/4 of the width of the greenhouse from the side wall.
evaporative cooling
System used to reduce temperature by evaporating water into the air stream. The importance of evaporative cooling is to reduce temperature in the greenhouse by evaporating and causing energy from the air to become lost causing the temperature to drop.Located along an entire side or end of the greenhouse.
shade cloth
Material for hanging over greenhouse glazing to cool it in warmer times of the year. The importance of the shade cloth is to shade the greenhouse from too much sun to keep it cool. It is located along the top of the entire greenhouse but can be rolled up when not needed.
horizontal fans
Small fan used to circulate air in a greenhouse. Its importance is to circulate air to encourage healthy plant growth by increasing CO2 availability. Located below the shade cloth.
Neutral Ventilation
Cooling a greenhouse with thermal buoyancy and wind. The importance of natural ventilation is to remove excess heat. Natural ventilation can enter the greenhouse through roof and sidewall vents.
